New Yorkers witnessed an unusual scene on a freezing Friday afternoon. While icy chunks floated across the Hudson River, a lone paddleboarder calmly moved through the cold water. Despite the harsh winter weather, the mysterious rider continued south with only a backpack.
Eddie Freiberg, a real estate agent, captured the moment from a high-rise apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. While showing a property to a client, Freiberg noticed a sudden burst of excitement near the window.
His client pointed toward the river and reacted in shock. According to Freiberg, the client exclaimed that someone was paddleboarding right through the icy water.
Curious and surprised, Freiberg quickly grabbed his phone. He filmed the paddler gliding across the partially frozen river without hesitation. Soon after, he shared the clip on Instagram, where it quickly attracted attention from viewers across New York City.
Freiberg admitted the scene caught him off guard. He explained that living in New York often brings unexpected sights. However, spotting someone paddleboarding in the middle of winter felt truly unusual.

Freezing Temperatures Didn’t Stop the Rider
The strange moment arrived shortly after a powerful winter storm. New York City had just experienced a historic blizzard that left thick ice patches along the Hudson River.
Weather reports showed afternoon temperatures around 38 degrees, while the river itself hovered near 35 degrees, creating extremely cold conditions for anyone near the water.
Authorities had not yet identified the paddleboarder, and firefighters received no confirmed reports about the activity.
Although the video spread quickly online, the identity of the adventurous paddler remains unknown. Freiberg joked that tagging the mystery rider online might eventually reveal the story behind the icy journey.
The surprising sight offered New Yorkers one more unforgettable winter moment, turning a freezing river into an unexpected stage for city life.
