A casual drink at a Seattle hotel bar turned into an unusual celebrity encounter for one man who had no idea he was speaking with Jack Black. The actor sat beside him during a work trip on Valentine’s Day about 20 years ago. What made the meeting memorable was not Black’s fame, but his simple gesture before leaving.
The man later shared the encounter on Reddit. He said Black sat next to him at the bar, and the two started talking without any awkwardness or celebrity fuss. Their conversation lasted about 30 minutes before Black needed to leave.
Before walking away, Black quietly paid the man’s bar tab.
The bartender then revealed the identity of the person who had just bought his drinks.
The man recalled: “ sat down next to me (had no idea who he was) and we struck up a conversation. Chatter for half an hour or so and he had to go. He picked up my tab as he left.”
The bartender reportedly told him, “Making friends with Jack Black, that’s pretty cool!” Black’s identity still meant nothing to him until the bartender explained who he was.
Black Kept It Casual

The man described Black as “super cool” and said he did not act like someone famous or “full of himself.” Instead, he came across as “Just a normal dude.”
Black had another reason to be in Seattle that night. The man later learned that Tenacious D, Black’s comedy rock band, had a concert in town.
By then, Black had already built a strong entertainment career. He starred as Dewey Finn in “School of Rock” in 2003, while Tenacious D released its self-titled debut album in 2001. The album included songs such as “Tribute” and “Wonderboy.”
Black later voiced Bowser in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and played Claptrap in the live-action “Borderlands” adaptation. More recently, he appeared as Steve in the live-action “Minecraft” movie.
The Seattle encounter showed a more down-to-earth side of Jack Black. He chatted with a stranger without mentioning his fame and quietly paid the man’s bar tab before leaving, turning an ordinary evening into a memorable celebrity encounter.
