Twin Venezuela Earthquakes Leave Hundreds Dead, Thousands Injured

A devastating earthquake disaster has left Venezuela struggling with widespread destruction after two powerful earthquakes struck within less than a minute on Wednesday evening.Rescue crews, firefighters, military personnel, and volunteers continue searching through collapsed buildings across Caracas and nearby regions as hopes of finding more survivors begin to fade.

With hundreds of structures reduced to rubble and emergency services stretched beyond capacity, the disaster has become one of the country’s deadliest natural tragedies in decades.

Death Toll Continues to Rise

Two days after the earthquakes, Venezuela’s National Assembly President, Jorge Rodríguez, confirmed during a televised briefing on Friday that the death toll had climbed to 920, while 3,360 people had been injured. Authorities also reported that hundreds of homes suffered severe structural damage or were destroyed, leaving thousands of residents without shelter.

Search-and-rescue operations remain active across the hardest-hit areas as crews work carefully through unstable debris in hopes of locating people trapped beneath collapsed buildings.

With emergency responders facing mounting pressure, volunteers have traveled to disaster zones carrying personal tools, including shovels, hammers, and other basic equipment, to assist recovery efforts.

Volunteer Sebastian Arias described the emotional impact of the destruction, saying, “The devastation is overwhelming. Taking photographs doesn’t even feel right.” He also noted that while some locations had large numbers of volunteers, other neighborhoods lacked both manpower and essential rescue equipment.

International aid teams have also begun arriving as local emergency resources struggle to meet growing demands.

Powerful Quakes Leave Cities in Ruins

The earthquakes measured magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, making them among the strongest seismic events to affect northern Venezuela in recent history. Tremors were felt across at least five northern Caribbean coastal states, where earthquakes of this strength are uncommon.

The last earthquake of similar magnitude to strike Caracas occurred in 1967, when a magnitude 6.7 earthquake claimed more than 200 lives.

Residents described frightening scenes as buildings swayed violently, windows shattered, and crowds rushed into open streets for safety.

Claudia Castillo recalled the terrifying moments, saying, “Everything around me was shaking. Flower vases crashed onto the floor, paintings fell from the walls, and nothing stayed in place. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced.”

Ana Soffer, who lives in the Los Palos Grandes neighborhood of Caracas, witnessed the disaster unfold while driving near a shopping mall.

“I watched people running out of the mall as a huge cloud of dust filled the air. My entire body was trembling, so I focused on calming my breathing,” she explained.

La Guaira Faces the Worst Damage

Although destruction has been reported throughout Caracas and several northern states, officials say the greatest damage is concentrated in La Guaira, Venezuela’s main port city serving the capital.

Dozens of buildings collapsed in the city, forcing rescue teams to work through massive piles of debris in an urgent effort to reach survivors trapped underneath. Heavy machinery has been deployed alongside emergency crews to remove rubble while military personnel secure affected areas.

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez met with the army’s general staff on Thursday to coordinate emergency operations and speed up rescue efforts in La Guaira.

She also declared a nationwide state of emergency and called on healthcare workers to immediately report for duty as hospitals struggle to treat the growing number of injured patients.

“We need every doctor and nurse at their assigned hospitals. Emergency rooms must be prepared to care for everyone arriving for treatment,” Rodríguez said during a televised address.

International Assistance Begins Arriving

Authorities have closed Venezuela’s main airport after engineers identified structural damage to the terminal roof. Schools will remain closed for the rest of the week, while officials continue urging residents to stay away from buildings that may have been weakened by the earthquakes.

Several countries experienced in earthquake response, including Mexico, Chile, and El Salvador, have dispatched emergency personnel, rescue specialists, and medical supplies.

The United States has also announced assistance by sending rescue teams from Virginia and California, along with aerial imaging support to help evaluate damage in remote coastal regions. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that search-and-rescue operations remain the immediate priority.

The international response comes during a period of strained diplomatic relations between Venezuela and the United States following the January U.S. operation that resulted in the capture of former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

The disaster has added strain to a country already facing infrastructure challenges.

Under Acting President Delcy Rodríguez, recovery efforts have been complicated by overloaded hospitals, shortages of medical supplies, and recurring power outages that disrupt emergency services.

As rescue operations continue and international assistance grows, Venezuela faces a long recovery that will require significant rebuilding and humanitarian support.
